چکیده

Optical radial velocities have been measured for 38 C-type Mira variables. These data together with others in the literature are used to study the differences between optical and CO mm observations for C-Miras and the necessary corrections to the optical velocities are derived in order to obtain the true radial velocities of the variables. The difference between absorption and emission line velocities is also examined. A particularly large difference (+30 km s) is found in the case of the Hα emission line. A catalogue is given of 177 C-Miras with estimated distances and radial velocities. The distances are based on bolometric magnitudes derived in Paper I using SAAO observations or (for 60 of the stars) using non-SAAO photometry. In the latter case the necessary transformations to the SAAO system are derived. These data will be used in paper III to study the kinematics of the C-Miras.

The derivation of pulsation velocities from Doppler line profiles in M-type Mira variables

Model atmospheres for pulsating Mira variables have been used to examine the correction factor that should be used to convert radial velocities derived from the Doppler profiles of observed infrared lines into the velocities immediately above and below the strong shock in the atmosphere. The correction factor varies by a moderate amount depending on the lines selected. Correction factors of ∼1....

Miras and Other Cool Variables with GAIA

A general review is given of Mira and some other cool variables stars, concentrating on those aspects on which GAIA, and more particularly GAIA spectroscopy and radial velocities, will have a major impact.

The Galactic Kinematics of Mira Variables

The galactic kinematics of Mira variables derived from radial velocities, Hipparcos proper motions and an infrared period-luminosity relation are reviewed. Local Miras in the 145-200day period range show a large asymmetric drift and a high net outward motion in the Galaxy. Interpretations of this phenomenon are considered and (following Feast and Whitelock 2000) it is suggested that they are ou...

Carbon-Rich Mira Variables: Kinematics and Absolute Magnitudes

The kinematics of galactic C-Miras are discussed on the basis of the bolometric magnitudes and radial velocities of Papers I and II of this series. Differential galactic rotation is used to derive a zero-point for the bolometric period-luminosity relation which is in satisfactory agreement with that inferred from the LMC C-Miras. We find for the galactic Miras, Mbol = −2.54logP + 2.06(±0.24), w...

Circumstellar CO emission of an oxygen-rich sample

We report on the first systematic study of the mass-loss properties of O-rich irregular variables of type Lb. 12CO (J=1–0, 2–1, and 3–2) line observations were carried out using the SEST, the Onsala 20 m TELESCOPE, the JCMT and the IRAM 30 m ANTENNA. In total 20 stars were detected among the 31 objects observed (all are new detections; in three cases detections are precluded because of strong i...
